  • Tilt and trim seals

I found out why I had to add some more fluid to my unit, it's leaking out of the top of the trim cylinders. Can I replace the seals or does the whole unit need to be replaced? This is the answer I received from a marine mech

Quote"My labour rate is $60. per hour, it sounds like you need a new piston for the tilt & trim pump, A new complete trim & tilt pump runs about $3000. I might have a used complete unit here that will work, I will need the measurements or to see the motor. The cost is about $1200.
I have had NO luck opening the older ones because they have already seized and then they break when opened and it requires a new one anyway."

Does this sound true, mine move up and down freely and no signs of corrsion anywhere and I have read others have replaced just the seals, looking for some clarification thanks.

What a crock of crap. Getting ready to do mine. The tool is a little pricey at about $130. The seals are about $70 for both cyl. There are guys that use a punch and hammer to remove the end gland (book calls it a cyl screw). I prefer to just buy the correct tool. Hit the piston rod with a hammer and it's fubar.

Seems like that little spanner wrench would unscrew that end cap with the seal in it, replace the seal, screw cap back on. Is it somehow more complicated than that?

        Ha I just did this

Nonsense! Infact I just ordered tool off ebay maybe when im done I will sell minus my rental lol. New yamaha parts for ring seal orange now and better made than black seal. The seal leaking is under those caps. I just did my tilt ram with piston wasnt a big deal took my time in garage. I overordered parts not knowing what I needed but really only the dust seal maybe and for sure ring under caps. Havent done trims yet waiting on my tool but it looks super easy. Getting the caps off is hardest part of job and my spanner would not do trims but I got luck on ram part. Read up on my posts should help you and learn where manual bleed off screw is.

with the information you have given us all the above answers are FUBAR.
DO NOT try the punch method.
not many of us techs left that can cut the cap out.
typically the caps torque to around 80Ft lbs.
typically the cap removal pins can take about 100FT lbs.
thats why oxygen acetylyne is my best buddy.
but it depends on which ram is leaking and which one of about 8 different trim/tilt units we are disscussing as to what parts are needed.
about now an engine model number would be best.

I'm sorry I forgot to mention the make a 1997 C150 TLRV, I priced the parts out here as the schematic blow ups are quite helpful, all the seals I think I require are under 30.00 bucks. I'm taking it to a Yamaha shop I think as I don't have a spanner wrench and the response from the other mechanic made me shy away from him.

Do seals go are there usually other causes, I felt for burrs, knicks and couldn't feel any, it doesn't leak down when tilted as that cylinder doesn't appear to have any leaks. Just the trim ones have minor amount of fluid around seal and it looks dry and cracked. Thanks.

Just make sure shop does not do any damage to caps

I used hair blower for awhile then the spanner and wammo. For trim caps get the proper tool $65 off ebay. Heat and work tool should be all that's needed.
Trim is do it yourself project in garage take your time. Just take some 400 emery to any burrs or scraches on rods

I'm going to do it myself, I'm going to order everything off this site cause the blow up shows what I need. Should I by the kit with the trim rods or just replace the seals? I thought since I had to take it out replace it or leave it if good? Only starbord trim leaks but I want to do both, where do I buy the spanner wrench?

                    Well I received the tool

Job took me 20 minutes being careful not to scratch inside caps. My caps did not have oring which ive seen on some models. Tapped new part in with my hand and on wood. Socket set it in bore with hammer tap tap tap. Hard to belive the dust cap is holding fluid inside bore. If you want my tool $65 plus $7 to ship paypal. Should fit your unit mine has alum caps two trim rods + tilt. Piston ram for tilt I think is different hole size my spanner worked on this barely. Just to save you some time and effort get the correct tool like factory supplies or mine! I over ordered parts and really is not needed. Orings inside caps, dust caps maybe the piston orings but mine looked fine so did orings near top caps. If his labor rate is only $60 lol jump on it, 30 minutes makes it $30 and add for new tools bill should be around $200.

My parts and the tool are on the way. Looks like a good oportunity to change out the old fluid. How are you guys getting it out? What would happen if you energized the pump with the trim cyls out. Looks like that might be a good way to get all the residual fluid out. But may be tough to bleed after reassembly. Thoughts?

His labor rate may be 60.00 but he was tryng to sell me a whole new unit when all I need is seals. I will avoid him and never recommend him. Ordered seals going out today to find a wrench. Even if I run into issues I won't need a whole unit for 3000 and labor etc.

How about some pics of job or do video for online

You say wrench im confused. Get trim cap removal tools not spanners. Maybe mechanic would rent out this tool to you? My motor seems to work far better and no dripping from trims any more.

Is there a different name for a spanner wrench? Many others have used it.

Like rod and I are telling you

spanner wrench may or may not work. If there not tight and have been removed you have chance. But im 95 percent sure you need correct pin tool so you dont damage caps. Some have tried hammer and tapping on one end but that's wrong way to go about doing job correctly. Like I said get correct tool for caps or else you may need to order new caps and maybe damage housings at $2500 it's not option to me. I have the tool sitting in my garage yes I might need it again but hey if you want to buy it I will sell. My tool has 4 pins and is cut out in center works better than factory 3 pin setup, more torque on part.
