  • 1987 40 HP Yamaha Low Speed/Idle Problems

At low speeds or when idling the engine will make a loud "chirping" sound and then die. Any ideas about where to start?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I guess I would start by removing plugs and rotate by hand to see if a cylinder is not operating freely. Also compression check. Does it do it in gear only or idling in neutral also? I witnessed a mercury die in the same fashion, turned out to have a badly scored cylinder. (hopefully not the case).

The chirp you hear will be from the crankcase. Check for fluid leaking around where the front and back of the case mate.
