HI, can the 2.5A be started while in gear?

    Most likely, no.

    It's a safety feature.

W/O a year, model #, 2 or 4 stroke, we're unable to even look your engine under "parts".

I suspect this is an F2.5. F as in four stroke since Yamaha never offered a 2.5 HP two stroke.

I went to the parts catalog and looked to see if there were parts used to prevent starting the motor in gear. Could not find anything.

I then looked in an owner's manual. There is a warning note that says to always start the motor in neutral to prevent the boat from moving.

Perhaps the F2.5 does not offer start-in-gear protection. News to me. But no two Yams are alike.
