  • Shifting linkage on a 1988 yamaha 150prov

Just wondering if any one can help. I have a yamaha 150 that shifts sometimes into reverse. I have adjusted and played around with the control cable trying to get it set. I'll get it set and it will work for a while then start the same thing, shifting sometimes. Today I took the cable off and was looking at the shifting rod where the linkage attaches and there is a considerable amount of play in it when u go into Forward or Reverse. Does this mean more then likely the splines are probably wore out where it goes into the lower unit? Any help would be great. Thanks

most likely, the shift shaft is corroded away.

Rod, that's what I was thinking also. Has anybody here ever installed the one you push up from the lower unit, where you don't have to pull the power head. A guy out in California machines them. A little pricey but probably worth it.

yes I have installed several of them.
        takes about 2 hours.
        they work well.
        cant remember the company name.
something like jones engineering or something.
beats cutting off the bolts holding the powerhead off.
