70TLRS CDI Ignition Coil Wire Identification

    I just had the same issue with my 70tlrs. The 3 wires coming out of the cdi were different lengths. The longest went to cylinder 1 and the shortest went to cylinder 3. Hope this helps you

      Thanks for the input guys. I will definitely check the wire lengths but hopefully I can confirm #1 cylinder by identifying a pulse with a multimeter (or spark with a plug lamp). Based on the service manual this should fire at 7 degrees ATDC "at full reversed" or as I would say fully retarded. If the service manual is correct then #2 cylinder will be the easiest to identify and #3 will be even easier . If I get spark from #2 then its back to the drawing board.

        still a timing light will show when each is firing when moved to the individual plug wires

          Thanks for your help fellas. The wire lengths were different as Blk88notch suggested and I was able to verify the firing using the other techniques suggested. Problem solved.
