  • F9.9 Cut out, since then no spark

A few days ago my F9.9 cut out in a few seconds while motoring at half throttle. Since then i determined I had no spark, constructed a DVA adapter and performed the suggested measurements from the workshop manual. However I am unsure what part to replace.

Battery is charged, motor cranks at normal speed

    With the spark coil connected:
    5V at the charge coil
    0V at the ignition coil

    With the spark coil disconnected
    245V at the charge coil
    236V at the ignition coil

Resistance of both ignition and charge coil measure ok.
I removed the flywheel, visually checked the charge coil, which seems alright.

This leads me to suspect either the charge coil or the ignition coil. I do however read that ignition coils almost never fail on the primary.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

What year and model is this 9.9? All the information is on the data plate on the transom.

I cannot easily get at the transom since it is built into a sailboat.
Judging by the colors of the trigger coil, it should be F9.9E (2007-2013) with electric start and remote.

Hi. I am new here. I have a yamaha 9.9 2 stroke from 2005. It will not start. I have :
        cleaned carb
        New gas
        Cleaned filter

However, i am confused about the instructions i have seen on removing the carb. It says to remove the choke rod. Which is above the throttle rod. However, there is no choke rod on my engine. Please enlighren me . ?

            Go to this page: http://www.yamahaoutboardparts.com/f...outboard-forum

On the upper left is a button, "+ New Topic". Click on that and you have a brand new thread.

If you have the full model # is helpful if posted too...

            More basic information too, IE
Has the engine sat for a long time?
            Do you have spark?
Is the spark plug getting wet with fuel?

Don't answer here, on YOUR new thread...

Really need model # for your engine. I have the shop manual for 2007 and 2013 F9.9

What manual are you using...is it a Yamaha manual?

Considering the exploded views it should be a F9.9FELR from 2010.

First I replaced the charge coil, this made no difference.
Then I ordered a replacement CDI from aliexpress, and after exchanging the old one with the new one, it started right away.

So the CDI unit was the culprit.
