I hesitate to take anything apart right now, because the boat is in the water, and the motor is on the boat, and the bow is facing the dock, and I don't want to drag a 90 pound motor along the edge of a tippy blowboat and try to heave it 4 feet over water up onto the dock
Tomorrow I'm pulling the boat out of the water and trailering at home, so I'll be able to dig into the motor without worrying about dropping nuts and bolts overboard
But in the meantime, the above parts diagram is from Yamaha's own parts index, and it's labeled as a 1993 9.9 ELHR
Is it possible there were both two and four stroke versions of the same engine? It seems unlikely that they would both carry the same model designation
Is it possible that the above diagram is actually a four stroke? I've rebuilt plenty of car engines, but I don't know anything about outboards
    (blow boaters)
Any suggestions appreciated, I'll have more pictures to post in a couple days
Thanks for helping me sort this out!

Looking up all the 9.9's for that year, there are 2 stroke and 4 stroke 9.9's.

look on the port side transom bracket.
        if it is an F9.9TLER or a T9,9TLER its a 4 stroke.
if its a 9.9tler its a two stroke,

You posted it was a T9.9ELHR
But did not look up parts for a T9.9

            - it has a dipstick to check engine oil
            - the engine cover clearly says 'four stroke'
            - it bubbles and purrs like a four stroke
            - the exhaust is clean and not oily
            - it's quiet and powerful like a four stroke
            - the manual that came with it says it's a four stroke
            - the model # comes up as a four stroke
            - everything I search online says it's a four stroke
            - the manual says nothing about adding oil to the gas, only fuel stabilizer

pretty sure I've got a four stroke on my hands

it may even just be a dirty screen in the pickup tube of tge fuel tank that is restricting flow
again, the motor starts and runs great, it just slowly dies over time, like the tank can't get air and is creating vaccuum (but I'm running with the fill cap unscrewed a bit to relieve air pressure)
anyway, the pickup tube is all I jave time to check today - getting ready to pull boat and trailer home

            thanks for all the suggestions!

when looking up parts always make sure your on the CORRECT page.
                  big difference between a T9.9tler and a 9.9tler.
both are rated at 9.9HP however about all they have in common is Yamaha silver blue paint.
