  • NMEA cables?

    Looking for a source to buy the correct NMEA 2000 cables to set up a Lowrance network.

    many options - eBay, Amazon, Westmarine

    long ago Lowrance used some proprietary "Blue" connectors -
    but now use standard - so any brand of NMEA 2000 parts will interchange

    the Lowrance brand of "starter kit" is one of the better values for what you get
    as is their "Yamaha Interface Cable"

      Thank you for your response! Very helpful. The plan is to connect the Icom AIS 506 to the Garmin 5200 globalmap chart plotter for the GPS signal and the Yamaha 150TXR outboard to the Chart plotter to read the engine sensors using the NMEA 2000 network. The next step would be to connect the old Furuno 582 sounder to the chart plotter to see actual depths on the chart plotter using NMEA 00183..

        Was able to get the backbone up and running! Went for shake down cruise today. Can some one tell me the normal operating range for the water temp? I have a 2006 F150 TXR outboard. Thanks, Nick

          You normally won't see water temp via a Yamaha Command Link network. What you are seeing is engine temperature. What is it?

            Temp went as high as 195f at 5200rpm, while doing a shake down cruise. Water temp was 65f. Doing about 30knots.

              Normal.
              The outboard temp reading is very different from that of a closed cooling system;
              in your automobile temp comes up to 'normal" and then stays exactly there

              with your F150 it will 'warm' up to about ~140 at idle/low rpms
              but then increase with rpms/load
              you'll likely see >200 at high speed, particularly in warmer water

                Thanks for the response! Having the ability to see the operating parameters while under way is a eye opener. Had not idea what was happening before.

                  Imagine if you had a guage for everything possible, not only would you need a ****pit like an airliner but the gauges would be moving every which way, drawing away your attention from looking where you are going, but also require considerable concentration as to what should be displayed for all the given operating conditions that an outboarded boat may find itself in.
                  An example recently on this forum was guages for the cooling water. We already have an over temperature alarm and a tell tall stream; but the argument was that you could add a pressure guage as well as a temperature guage, and if this was put in the tell tail circuit, there still is confusion as to what these guages will be telling us: ie. is there a blockage or water pump failure or indeed when is there an engine overheat.

                  It becomes the more information available the more there will be questions and disputes, just like in the "expert" worlds.

                      Yes. There is.

                      Well, now that I think about it. No.

                      NMEA 2000 output was only implemented in 2006 and later four stroke models and two stroke HPDI models.

                        if the motor is running great, then take some pics of the info at idle and different RPMs
                        then you have something to look at or compare later on when the motor is not running properly.

                        or even better write it all down and share with others too

                          RPM
                          Alternator Voltage (14VDC)
                          Engine Hours (total)
                          Engine Temperature (140 to200f)
                          Fuel Rate ( nautical mile per gallon)
                          Oil Pressure (60PSI)
                          Trim
                          Water Pressure (14 PSI)
