93 Yamaha 55hp 2 stroke charging system

Just purchased this 86 Lowe Semi-V with a 55hp 2 stroke. Previous owner said he didn't think outboard was charging the battery..

what do I need to look at/for to know if it will charge my battery ?

Run it in the water or on earmuffs (water hose connected) and measure the voltage if you have a meter.
If not, a light bulb should run brighter when engine is running to indicate it is charging.
But to be more precise voltage readings should be taken.

Is it a 55 or a C55 model?

As Zeno notes, make some measurements. Measure the battery prior to starting the motor. Should be more or less 12.7 volts. Start the motor. Should be above 12.7 volts. More than likely 14.6 volts or so. If so, the charging system is working. If not, then there is something wrong. Could be as simple as a blown fuse.
