    well you do not know what the problem is yet,
    I still think it could be detonation knock. fuel burning too fast before piston is all of the way up, low octane fuel, too much spark advance, carbon build up getting hot enough to ignite fuel before spark.
    maybe a combination of those

      Man, I hope you're right. Still waiting for a timing light. I'm using an octane booster and a carb cleaner added to the gas to try compensating for lousy fuel. I've been told to go to premium gas but they don't sell much of that here, too expensive for the locals, so I'm afraid it will be really old gas. So I guess, basically, I'm brewing my own. We used to blow the carbon out of the old Ford by pouring water in the carb while it was running. No to be recommended. Any advantage to pulling off the head. I have a spare head gasket but would have to try to borrow a torque wrench.
