  • Alternative to removing siezed bolt in aluminum!

Have a customers 10 HP B&S Generator that hasn't run in years. The carb (like others), varnish up / clog.

The carb body and bowl is both aluminum, two bolts (screw heads) hold the bowl to the body. 5mm (small)

One screw comes loose, the other, seized big time. Hand held impact tool with PB Blaster (while clamped in a vise), no go..
Add heat with a heat gun, no go, just bugger up the steel head of the screw.

Put a vise grip on it, nope, no budging..

Take a Dremel, cut a new slot to the head of the bolt, try the impact tool again, nope..

Now comes the "BIG GUN", (literally). Out come the air Chisel.

*Put the tip of the tool on the newly cut edge. Carefully and slowly, hammer away counter clockwise (not downward) till you see some movement of the bolt . Sure enough, get some movement, hammer the other direction to break away rust/etc. Took a vise grip a full turn CC
before you could turn with a screw driver.

Successfully removed ( I have spare bolts for this reason, threads were fine).

Carb cleaned, machine runs like a top..

10 years is a long time for a gen set to sit up.
did the gen put out power?
the old monkey ward 1700 watt I have sitting around runs usually but I have to use some scotchbrite to clean off the slip ring the brushes ride on before it will put out anything

Its a 10 HP Briggs, I didn't look at the manufacture date but I suspect it's at least that old.

Before I even opened the carb, I have a spare "test" carb for that engine. I ran the engine with that carb first to make sure the engine ran and DID produce power.

All four 110 outlets work fine as did the one 30 amp outlet (tested with both carbs).

Winterized it, did my carb drain mod (put SS, Heli coil, threads and a drain bolt in the middle of the float bowl-to FULLY drain the carb when done.

Customer just left with the machine...

Drain plug mod below. Drill bowl, Heli coil bowl using RED Loctite, insert new drain plug bolt:

The youngsters today will have no idea what you are talking about.

The monkey ward is next to the Western Auto. You could get ammo at either one.

I forget was the Montgomery Ward and Western Auto the same in the later years?

              nope they were separate stores.

MW turned into Wards before going away

I think I have seem Western Auto signs still some where down around here in Tx

Western Auto was actually purchased by Sears and later sold to Advance Auto Parts. Advance Auto still owns the brand but there should be no stores using that brand legally.

maybe you need to start selling that conversion on e bay.
but that means you would have to get your hands on some bowls
