  • Yamaha 1998 8hp tilt lock question

I have a 98 8hp MLHW Yamaha 2 stroke and am wondering if the hooks (dogs) are supposed to lock the engine in place on the tilt lock rod when in forward gear? It does so in reverse, but they move down slightly in forward gear from their position in neutral, but still don't catch, so am wondering if it is or is not supposed be in the locked position in forward gear?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm fairly positive the answer is no. On my Yamaha 15 and 25 2 strokes forward allows you to tilt the mOtor up, and in the event your leg strikes something it will allow it to lift. Hope this helps.

No it is a safe feature to let the motor kick up if you strike something below the water as not to rip your transom off.
